Picture of a Hockey PuckTrivia Question

In what year did the NHL first compete for the Stanley Cup, and in what year did they assume sole control of the Stanley Cup?

Trivia Question Answer

The NHL champion first competed for the Stanley Cup against the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) champion in 1917/1918 season. The NHL took the place of the National Hockey Association (NHA) to compete for the Stanley Cup when the NHA dissolved in 1917.

From the 1921/1922 season through 1923/1924 Season the NHL participated in a three way competition for the Stanley Cup facing the champions of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) and the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL). The PCHA and the WCHL merged in 1924 to form the Western Hockey League (WHL), and for the 1924/1925 and 1925/1926 seasons the competition pitted the NHL champion against the WHL champion.

The WHL folded in 1926 and since then the Stanley Cup has been awarded to NHL champions starting with the 1926/1926 season.
