Men’s Boston Marathon Winner Not from Africa

The winner of the men’s division of the 2014 Boston Marathon was Meb Keflezighi, a U.S. citizen and the first U.S. citizen to win the race since 1983 – a race that has recently been dominated by citizens of African countries. Prior to 2014, when was the last time that the men’s division of the Boston Marathon was won by a citizen of a country outside of Africa?

Previous to 2014, the last time the men’s division of the Boston Marathon was won by someone who called home some place other than Africa was in 2001 when Lee Bong-Ju from South Korea won the Boston Marathon with a time of 2:09:43. In the interveing years between 2001 and 2014 the men’s division has be dominated by runners from Ethiopia and Kenya.

It should be noted that 2014’s winner, Meb Keflezighi was born in Asmara, Eritrea in Africa. He and his family came to the United States as refugees in 1987. He became a U.S. Citizen in 1998 – the year he graduated from UCLA.
