What was the first year that women were allowed to compete in the French Open (known at that time as “Championnat de France”)?

The first women to compete in the “Championnat de France”, the precursor to the modern French Open  (Les internationaux de France de Roland-Garros), competed in 1897. It was won in that year Adine Masson of France. She went on to win the event again in 1898, 1899, 1902 and 1903.
