Last Legal Spitballer

Picture of a BaseballTrivia Question

Who was the last Major League Baseball pitcher officially permitted to throw the spitball?

Trivia Question Answer

Hall-of-Famer Burleigh Grimes, nicknamed “Ol’ Stubblebeard”, made his major league debut on September 10, 1916 as a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. When the spitball was banned from baseball in 1920, Grimes was named as one of the 17 established pitchers who would be allowed to continue to legally throw the pitch. Making the most of this advantage, Grimes won 270 games over the course of his 19-year career and pitched in four World Series. At the time of his retirement in 1934, Grimes was the last remaining spitball pitcher left in the league. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1964.
