The most points scored in an NBA playoff game, breaking Elgin Baylor‘s 1962 record of 61, is 63 by Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls in a double overtime game against the Boston Celtics on April 20, 1986. The Celtics prevailed in that first round of the 1986 playoffs and went on to defeat Houston in the NBA Finals for the 1986 NBA Championship.

Elgin Baylor, who played his entire career with the Lakers, holds the record for the most points scored in an NBA finals game. He scored 61 points in game 5 of the Lakers / Celtics finals series on April 14, 1962 in Boston. The Celtics went on to win the series. Baylor was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1977.

Baylor’s 61 points is no, however, any longer the most points scored in a single NBA playoff game. That record will be a question for another day…

Hall-of-Famer Burleigh Grimes, nicknamed “Ol’ Stubblebeard”, made his major league debut on September 10, 1916 as a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. When the spitball was banned from baseball in 1920, Grimes was named as one of the 17 established pitchers who would be allowed to continue to legally throw the pitch. Making the most of this advantage, Grimes won 270 games over the course of his 19-year career and pitched in four World Series. At the time of his retirement in 1934, Grimes was the last remaining spitball pitcher left in the league. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1964.
