25-Game Winner Who Didn’t Win Cy Young Award

Picture of a BaseballTrivia Question

Since the Cy Young Award began in 1956, who is the only National League pitcher to have won 25 or more games in a season without winning the award?

Trivia Question Answer

Hall-of-Famer Juan Marichal earned this dubious distinction three times. In 1963, Marichal won 25 games but lost in the Cy Young voting to Sandy Koufax, who also won 25 that year. In 1966, Marichal won 25 games but again lost out to Koufax, who tallied 27 victories. In 1968, Marichal won 26 games but was overshadowed by the outstanding season turned in by Bob Gibson, who won 22 games and compiled an astounding 1.12 ERA.
