The Adams Award is named after Jack Adams who was a Hockey Hall of Fame player for Toronto, Vancouver, and Ottawa. He was also a coach and general manager of the Detroit Red Wings. The award is given to the NHL’s coach of the year.

The Adams Award was first awarded in the 1973/1974 season. The first recipient was Fred Shero of the Philadelphia Flyers. It was the only time that he won the award.
