Larry Doby was the 2nd black player to play major league baseball and the first in the American League. His major league debut was July 5, 1947 for the Cleveland Indians. He was signed by Cleveland 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier with Brooklyn. Doby played through 1959, was on 7 All-Star teams, was a member of 1948 World Series Champion Cleveland Indians team, and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998 by the Veteran’s Committee.
