The Pittsburgh Steelers first took the field in 1933 as the Pittsburgh Pirates. They changed their name to the Steelers in 1940. In 1943 they were known as the Philadelphia-Pittsburgh “Steagles” and in 1944 as Card-Pitt when World War II player shortages caused their merger with other teams. They have been known as the Steelers from 1945 on. The Steelers became part of the AFC in 1970.
