The Arizona Cardinals were founded in 1898 in Chicago as the Morgan Athletic Club. They were known as the Racine Normals in 1899 and 1900 because they were located in Normal Park on Chicago’s Racine Avenue. They then became the Racine Cardinals from 1901 to 1906, and then again in 1913 to 1919 after reforming. In 1920, as a charter member of the NFL, they became the Chicago Cardinals. They were the Chicago Cardinals through 1943, and then merged for a year with the Pittsburgh Steelers as Card-Pitt for 1 season in 1944. In 1945 the were once again the Chicago Cardinals, a name they held through 1959. In 1960, with a move to St. Louis, they became the St. Louis Cardinals. They became the Phoenix Cardinals with their move to Arizona in 1988. In 1994 they changed to their current name, the Arizona Cardinals.

The player was Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger. The movie about him and his quest to play for the Fighting Irish is the popular Rudy. The movie was the first that Notre Dame allowed to be filmed on campus since the 1940 classic Knute Rockne All American.
