It took many years, and multiple reviews of race tapes, but finally in 2012 the Maryland Racing Commission set Secretariat’s time for the 1973 Preakness at 1:53 giving Secretariat the record for the fastest running of a Preakness Stakes for the 1-3/16 miles (1.91 km) distance. The race has had different distances over the years. The current distance has been in place since 1925.
