Prior to 2014, when was the last time that the men’s division of the Boston Marathon was won by a citizen of a country outside of Africa?

Previous to 2014, the last time the men’s division of the Boston Marathon was won by someone who called home some place other than Africa was in 2001 when Lee Bong-Ju from South Korea won the Boston Marathon with a time of 2:09:43. In the interveing years between 2001 and 2014 the men’s division has be dominated by runners from Ethiopia and Kenya.

It should be noted that 2014’s winner, Meb Keflezighi was born in Asmara, Eritrea in Africa. He and his family came to the United States as refugees in 1987. He became a U.S. Citizen in 1998 – the year he graduated from UCLA.

Women were not allowed to officially enter the Boston Marathon until 1972. In that year Nina Kuscsik of the United States won with a time of 3:10:26. However, in 1996, the victories of unofficial women runners dating back to 1966 were officially recognized. The first recognized winner in 1966 was Bobbi Gibb of the United States with a time of 3:21:40, the first course record that held until 1970.

Rocky Marciano won the heavyweight title in 1952 and held the title until his retirement in 1956. In his boxing career he had 49 fights, all of which he won with 43 won by knockout. The only person to go 15 rounds with Rocky Marciano was Ezzard Charles in a title fight in 1954, which Marciano won by a unanimous decision. The two fought again later that same year and Marciano knocked out Charles in the 8th round.
