Prior to 1901, since their origination in 1894 as a minor league team in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the team was known as the Grand Rapids Rustlers (1894–1899) and the Cleveland Lake Shores (1900).

On the first pitch of his first major league at bat on September 2, 2006, Kevin Kouzmanoff of the Cleveland Indians hit at grand slam off Texas Rangers pitcher Edinson Volquez. While many players have hit a home run on the first pitch they faced, Kouzmanoff is one of only two major league players to hit a grand slam off of the first pitch he faced. The second person to hit a grand slam off of the fist pitch they saw in the major leagues was Red Sox rookie Daniel Nava who hit a grand slam on the first pitch he saw in his first major league at bat on June 12, 2010.
