WAR stands for Wins Above Replacement. It is a complicated statistical framework that strives to measure a players contribution to their team. The statistic indicates how the team does with a particular player as compared to “a replacement level player” as a substitute. Thus a positive WAR says the player is better than an average replacement player (for example, a WAR of 4.2 says that the players team won 4.2 more games then if a replacement were playing). A negative WAR says that the player is worse than an average replacement player.
